Founded as a neutral capital to appease rivals Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo provide an economic boost to the Brazilian hinterland, Brasilia was long derided as poorly-planned artifice. Today it is a metropolis of nearly 3 million people, the political centre of Latin America’s biggest economy and widely respected as an architectural highlight thanks to Oscar Niemeyer’s grand vision for the nation’s new dawn. Brasilia adds self-assured grandeur to the warm-hearted attitude of its people, making it the perfect place to open the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour 2012! Bringing this wildly popular sport inland from the coast, the city enjoys not only its new and well-earned place as a powerhouse on the world stage, but as a focal point of entertainment on every level too.
As the capital prepares to kick off the Swatch World Tour for the fourth time in as many years, local heroes Larissa França and Juliana Felisberta da Silva hope to turn their home advantage to gold once again. Having won the event in 2010 and 2011 and boasting countless trophies from around the world, only the most courageous rivals will be able to stand in their way come 15 April!Among the men, the American power couple Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers has equally taken home the last two titles in Brasilia and will be aiming for a hattrick when this year’s event begins on 17 April.
Most definitely every player on tour will have London 2012 in the back of their heads, as thousands of beach volleyball fans await their international top stars. For the FIVB Heroes the road to London starts in Brasilia!
