For the first Grand Slam this year, our girls stay in China and compete in the Chinese metropole Shanghai. It is the first time a Grand Slam has been played in Shanghai, and both players and fans are excited about it!
So far this summer, the FIVB Heroes have absolutely ruled the women’s game. In the first two events they left no medal for any other team. The Brazilians Talita Antunes and her partner Maria Elisa Antonelli are the stand out players, winning one event and coming runners-up in the other.
The Chinese girls Chen Xue and Zhang Xi with one gold medal and one bronze medal are snapping at their heels though. Xue and Zhang Xi can hope for an extra boost this week, playing in front of thousands of Chinese beach volleyball fans.
Furthermore, Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva are determined to win their first tournament this summer. The World Champions haven’t make it to a final in the first few events, but their opponents know not to underestimate their quality.
The same applies to the US teams. April Ross and Jennifer Kessy as well as Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh haven’t made it onto the podium so far this season. Knowing them though, it should be only a matter of time before that changes. Jennifer and April know how it feels like to play a final in Shanghai, as they won silver last year.
Always good for a surprise is the German top team Laura Ludwig and Sara Goller as well as the Italian girls Marta Menegatti and Greta Cicolari.
Some of the teams took the last week off, so we can expect them to be fully recovered and on top form again.
Stay tuned for everything about this and the upcoming events!
