After a bronze and silver in the previous events in China this season, Larissa and Juliana finally achieved an eagerly anticipated gold medal. And it couldn’t have come on a more auspicious day, as the Brazilian ladies played their 100th World Tour tournament since they first teamed up together!
Losing only a single set during the entire week, Juliana and Larissa had to take on two other FIVB Heroes in the final. Italians Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti had battled their way to the last match in an impressive show of their strong mentality, winning several tie-break matches during the tournament. But in the end, Greta and Marta had to acknowledge the superior play of their opponents and succumbed to the Brazilians with 21-13, 21-15.
„This tournament was very good for us because we played well and got back our confidence. Now, I’ll go back to Brazil and train hard to prepare for the next tournament“, Juliana said after the match.
Even though they didn’t beat Larissa and Juliana, Greta Cicolari wasn’t disappointed at all: „We are very happy for the silver medal, the first silver medal for Italy. I’m really happy about the whole tournament, we are very proud of ourselves.”
German girls Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig as well as Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross also achieved good results, finishing fifth, while the most consistent team this year so far, Chen Xue and Zhang Xi, ended the tournament in ninth place. They share this result with Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, as well as Talita Antunes and Maria Elisa Antonelli.
Now our female Heroes have three weeks off until the Moscow Grand Slam takes place. Who is going to play and how will they do? Stay tuned at www.FIVBheroes.com to find out!
