For the second year in a row, Beijing hosts a Grand Slam and for some of our FIVB Heroes this place provides fond memories. Four years ago, FIVB Heroes Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor won gold at the Olympic Games with Chen Xue and Zhang Xi capturing the bronze medal. Kerri and Misty seem to like Beijing, as they also won the Grand Slam last year. “I hope to replicate that. I want to win this tournament so badly, we love it here in Beijing, the sand is so beautiful, the crowd is so beautiful. We are a good team and we just need to play like we are“, said Kerri Walsh.
So far this season it is the Chinese and Brazilian teams who have everything under control. Chen Xue and Zhang Xi won the Grand Slam in Shanghai last week, and the whole field will try to prevent them from doing it once more. On the other hand, the Chinese home crowd will do everything to push them as far as possible.
Their biggest rivals are Talita Antunes and Maria Elisa Antonelli. Both teams finished on the podium every weekend this year and will both be trying to add another medal to their collection in Beijing.
For two Heroes this week’s tournament will be a very special one: Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva will play their one hundredth World Tour event as a team. Of course the World Champions will do everything they can to top that off with a good result.
For Jennifer Kessy and April Ross this weekend might be their opportunity to reach their first podium this year, as they won a bronze medal at the same place last year.
