Second day in Long Beach – the stats tell the story

Captain and FIVB Hero Clayton Stanley and his team defeated Costa Rica in straight sets 3:0 (25:14, 25:9, 25:9). The FIVB Hero played the first two sets, and led by example, scoring eight points with a 75% efficiency in attack and three kill blocks in defence.

“As far as tonight went, I thought our team controlled the game behind the service line and had an effective block which kept the pressure on our opponents.” said Clayton Stanley. “As far as tomorrow goes, we want to keep doing what we have been doing – keep our serves in, keep improving and prepare for the next few matches coming up.”

In pool B Cuba easily beat the Dominican Republic 3:0 (25:15, 25:21, 25:15). Leon also played just the first two first sets, scoring 6 points. Although he only had a 36% efficiency ratio in attack he managed 2 kill blocks. At the press conference coach Orlando Samuel Blackwood described his team’s performance: “We tried to play better today than yesterday. We did not play well in the second set, but we came back in the third set and played better.”

Tomorrow Cuba will face Canada, the strongest opponent in pool B, while USA will come up against the host of the Pan American Games 2011, Mexico.

The winners of each group will qualify straight for the semi-finals, while the runners up will play the quarterfinals against the third finisher from the opposite pool. Will our FIVB Heroes reach the semis without defeat? Follow www.FIVBHeroes.com to find out!
