The Brazilian top team and reigning World Champions kept a clean sheet throughout the group stage and then breezed through the knockout rounds. In the semifinal they took on Americans Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena, who forced Alison and Emanuel into a decisive tie break. True champions that they are, they kept their cool and won 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-10). „This week we have had to be fighters because the first three matches were very difficult for us”, Emanuel said and continued, “The reason we are in the final is because we are very hard-hearted and we never give up.“
Reaching the final meant reliving their biggest success as a team, as on the same court one year ago, they had won the World Championship. Unfortunately they weren’t able to repeat this success. Against another American team, Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb, the Brazilians were only second best, losing 0-2 (13-21, 12-21). Despite this defeat, Alison was given a lot of credit by his opponent Gibb: „He is the best blocker in the world and we had to find a way around him tonight. He is a very special player.”
Now our Heroes have two weeks off to recharge their batteries. Fully recovered, they will be back for the Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland. Stay tuned at www.FIVBheroes.com to know all you need to know about your FIVB Heroes!
