Another thrilling weekend of volleyball took place in Gwangju, South Korea, where France, Italy, USA and the hosts Korean thrilled the public at Yeomju Gymnasium. On Friday France overcame Korea 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-15). FIVB Hero Antonin Rouzier and Ngapeth turned up the heat on the hosts, whose service reception continued to be poor, and led their team to the victory. In the next match the USA recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Italy 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-16). Best scorers for USA were Matthew Anderson (21 points), followed by our FIVB Hero Clayton Stanley with 20.
Plenty of emotions also on Saturday: Italy survived a strong comeback by Korea to beat their hosts 3-2 (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) at the Yeomju Gymnasium packed with FIVB Heroes fans. The same day the USA took a firm grip of the lead in the Pool with a convincing 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) win over nearest rivals France, to tie on 14 points. In the battle between FIVB Heroes Clayton Stanley and Antonin Rouzier, the Olympic champion won with 12 points against the Frenchman’s 11.
The last day was crucial for USA: they swept past Korea in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) to raise their record in the Pool to 7-2 and 20 points. In the press conference following the match FIVB hero Stanley commented: ”It’s nice to win three games in Gwangju. It was an almost perfect game today. Both serving and blocking were very good.” France on their side picked up their sixth win overcoming Italy in straight sets (26-24, 25-15, 25-22). France are now three points behind the USA in the standings while Italy are third with a 4-5 record and 11 points and Korea are sixth.
