Grand Prix: let the battle of the girls begin

The FIVB Heroes in Macau 2011!

The first week will be from 8to 10 June when teams will compete in four pools and countries. Unfortunately, many FIVB Heroes won’t be playing this weekend but will most likely return in the coming weeks.

In Pool A China will host Puerto Rico, Thailand and Argentina in Macau. The Asians won’t have their powerful opposite Yimei Wang on court because she’s recovering from an ankle injury, but as the hosts they already have a place in the finals.

Reigning champions USA are looking forward to make it a hat-trick and with the 2011 MVP Destinee Hooker their hopes are up. Could she lead her team to another win? In Pool B the Americans have to compete against Germany, with their star Margareta Kozuch, the experienced hosts the Dominican Republic, who have Milagros Cabral De La Cruz as their main player, and Chinese Taipei.

In Pool C Korea, with Hero Kim Yeon-Koung, will host Cuba, Japan and Turkey in Busan. Heroes Saori Kimura and Yoshie Takeshita are the key players of the Japanese side while Cuba, winner of two gold, four silver and two bronze medals in previous Grand Prix events, will have to manage without Hero Kenia Carcaces Opon. Turkey’s star Neslihan Darnel will probably be playing in the second week.

Pool D promise to be tough as Poland host Serbia, Italy and Brazil. The South Americans, world number 2, are looking forward to their ninth title after reaching second place in 2011, but this weekend they are fielding an alternative team so Sheilla Castro won’t be on court.

Serbia, bronze medalists in 2011, is the other candidate with Hero Jovana Brakocevic but the absence of Jelena Nikolic, who is still recovering from a foot injury will weigh heavily upon them. Joanna Kaczor from Poland  will try to lead the team to be among the best in the tournament while Italian star Simona Gioli will be out for the first two weeks.

It’s all set for the Grand Prix and the FIVB Heroes are ready to do their best for their countries and fans. What will be the big news of the first weekend? Find out at!
