Sara and Laura played a fantastic tournament and lost only one match, which unfortunately was their last one. In the final they came up short against Switzerland’s Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr 0-2 (12-21, 18-21). On the road to the final, the Germans had left two other teams of FIVB Heroes behind. First they caused a major upset by beating legendary Brazilians Larissa and Juliana 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 15-11), followed by the semifinal which saw Jen and April draw the short straw with 0-2 (19-21, 17-21). Sara and Laura simply proved too good to beat this weekend. „We just went out there and had fun. We just concentrated on our own game such as our serve and putting them under pressure“, Laura explained their winning strategy.
Jen and April didn’t give up, however, and came back strong for the bronze medal match. It was a clash of four FIVB Heroes, as they faced local Heroes Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti. Greta and Marta had played a superb tournament up to this point: neither Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor nor Talita Antunes and Maria Elisa Antonelli stood a chance against the Italian ladies as they won both matches 2-0 (21-18, 21-15). The final match became an absolute nailbiter, but the Americans pulled through to celebrate their bronze medals winning 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 13-15). „We are delighted with our bronze“, Jennifer said. „It is our first medal since Thailand last year. To beat them at home for the bronze is a big deal for us. They have played great all tournament and made it tough for us today.“
In two weeks, our Beach Heroes will move on to Gstaad, Switzerland.
