For the last round the Brazilian team was joined by their captain and FIVB Hero, Giba. The star player is not 100% match fit, but his presence is important for his teammates. Hi support was certainly needed in a tight game against Canada, with Brazil finally beating them in five sets 3:2. The following day, during the match against hosts Finland, his fans were at last rewarded with a short performance by the FIVB Hero!
In the meantime the Poles regained their throne, winning against Finland and Canada in straight sets. Bartosz Kurek was a standout of the Polish team in… block! The young FIVB Hero’s knee pain doesn’t appear to be troubling him anymore and he looks as though he is back to his best for the forthcoming matches. The opposite, Zibi Bartman, is also a standout player with a consistent 50% attack efficiency throughout the entire tournament!
Final countdown was on Sunday. Any victory for any team would secure them their tickets to Sofia. The Poles got off to a great start with the 2 firsts sets and were leading 8:5 in the third, when the Brazilians decided to stage a comeback, proving that with the Canarinhos you can never relax your guard! Murilo and his teammates grabbed the third set, giving his team hope and destroying the Polish fans’ nerves. But the Polish team focused again and the fourth set was a real battle point by point! In the end Poland triumphed and booked their spot in Sofia.
Brazil still has a chance as the best second place team, but they will have to wait for the results of the other groups. The Poles meanwhile, can take a few days off and then start preparing for the tournament in Sofia as a first finalist!
Congratulations to Kurek and Bartman and see you in Bulgaria! Which FIVB Heroes will join them there? Stay tuned to follow the results of the other pools!
