On Friday hosts Argentina beat Bulgaria 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17) with Hero Facundo Conte as the best scorer with 22 points. The Balkan visitors had travelled to Argentina with an alternative team after coach Radostin Stoychev and star player Matey Kaziyski had announced their decision to quit a day after qualifying for the Olympics.
Germany, leading Pool D, did everything in their power to keep their first place and after beating Portugal 3-1, it was time to face the hosts. In a high-quality match the Europeans won 3-0 despite the fact that FIVB Hero Ferdinand Tille didn’t play the entire match.
Sunday saw the most exciting match between Germany and Bulgaria. The Germans had the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the pool, but Bulgaria emerged victorious in a thrilling five-set encounter 3-2 (25-19, 14-25, 19-25, 25-23, 16-14).
In the last match Argentina earned a 3-1 victory against Portugal, who failed to win a single game in the competition, and reached second place. A very tight race, as Germany, Argentina and Bulgaria are now only a sole point apart: Germany 13, Argentina 12, Bulgaria 11, Portugal 0.
Next weekend, Portugal will be the hosts and our FIVB Heroes will try to lead their teams closer to the Final Six qualification. Stay tuned at www.fivbheroes.com to follow your favourite Heroes. All statistics and results can be found on www.fivb.org.
