The FIVB Heroes teams from Brazil, China and Italy made it to the semi-finals without a single loss. The German beach volleyball fans were excited to see the first semi-final match between Chen Xue and Zhang Xi facing Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler from Berlin. Being taken to a tiebreak, the top-seeded Chen Xue and Zhang Xi kept a cool head and went on to the final winning 2-1 (21-15, 19-21, 15-11).

The second semi-final saw Larissa and Juliana from Brazil against the Italians Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti. The experienced World Champions from Brazil showed their best to defeat Greta and Marta 2-0 (21-18, 21-16).

In the bronze medal match, Greta and Marta came back strong and left the German crowd disappointed as they came out on top against Holtwick and Semmler 2-0 (21-13, 21-19). After bronze in Brasilia and silver in Beijing, it is the third medal finish for the girls from Italy.

“We are still missing gold, but the main thing is we won a medal. We have improved and developed as a team and are happy with how it has gone here”, Greta stated after the match.

The last match of the Berlin Grand Slam was the ultimate match between the two top-seeded teams this weekend. Xue Chen and Zhang Xi did their best, but there was just no way to compete with Larissa and Juliana this week. Playing almost perfectly, the Brazilians rewarded themselves with the gold medal taking the final 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) in their favour.

“I’m so happy because we played with the right mentality,” Juliana said. “I’m very, very happy with our attitude and I really, really want it to stay like this for the rest of the season.”
