In Pool A, Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti were true to form, beating their Austrian opponents Doppler/Horst 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 16-14) after a thrilling tie-break. The second match of the Pool saw Paolo Nicolai taking on Patrick Heuscher. In this clash of two Olympic FIVB Heroes the Italian and his partner were the lucky winners and decided the match against the Swiss 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in their favour.
Pool B is starring the reigning Olympic Champions from Beijing. In their opening match, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers had little trouble to defeat their Japanese opponents 2-0 (21-15, 21-16). The second encounter saw Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira winning in straight sets 2-0 (25-23, 21-16) against Czech duo Benes/Kubala.
In Pool C Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann won their opener while Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu came up short. The European Champions from Germany clinched a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) win against a Russian team, while the Chinese lost 1-2 (21-18, 16-21, 12-15) to their Swiss opponents after almost one hour on the court.
The FIVB Olympic Heroes in Pool D proved equally unlucky in their first matches. Mariusz Prudel/Grzegorz Fijalek from Poland and Grant Goldschmit from South Africa lost 1-2 (21-12, 15-21, 12-15) and 0-2 (10-21, 11-21) respectively. Dutch FIVB Hero Reinder Nummerdor and his partner, however, managed to score their first victory in Pool E. After a tough fight, Reinder beat the underdogs from Venezuela 2-1 (21-18, 17-21, 15-10).
