“I’m really pleased and honoured to carry the flag of my country in this prestigious event. It was a total surprise”, said Rigobert, who will be the first woman in the history of Mauritius to act as flag bearer at the Olympics.
For Turkey, London 2012 will be a landmark moment, too, as the country is sending more female than male athletes for the first time in its history. Which may explain why Turkish sports minister Suat Kılıç announced last week that FIVB Hero Neslihan Darnel would be her country’s flag bearer: Darnel is not only the face of Turkish volleyball and Turkish sport in general. Above all, she is a shining example of a woman and mother for all the young athletes that will follow her during the event.
