On day one Leon lead team Cuba to a win over Brazil in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-22). For FIVB Heroes Murilo and Giba and team Brazil who have won the FIVB Volleyball World League nine times, the loss has soured their chances for a podium finish.
“That was the worst match in my 10 years in the national team” said Murilo.
In the second match our new FIVB Hero Tsvetan Sokolov and team Bulgaria supported by thousands of Bulgarian fans won 3:1 (26-28, 25-19, 29-27, 25-19) over from Germany, with FIVB Heroes Georg Grozer and Ferdinand Tille unable to prevent a loss.
The second saw the hosts resting while Poland took on Brazil and the USA squared up against Germany. Bartosz Kurek and Zibi Bartman helped their teammates to a thrilling 5 sets win over Brazil 3:2 (23:25, 25:23, 23:25, 25:17, 15:10), eliminating the Canarinhos from the tournament! For the Brazilians it was a bitter blow, but captain Giba congratulated Poland on a great victory.
Later that day Germany continued their run to the semi-final, winning over the USA 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 16-14). In a battle between the opposites and FIVB Heroes, Georg Grozer won out over Clayton Stanley!
USA can still qualify for the semi-final, but they will have to win against Bulgaria who has already qualified for the semis, and who will have home advantage in front of thousand passionate fans.
For Poland and Cuba their match is just a formality, as both teams are in the semis already. But the players still want to win!
“It doesn’t mean, we are qualified. We always want to win.” said Bartosz Kurek after the match.
