In Pool A, Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego took on Patrick Heuscher and his partner. The number one ranked team from Brazil left no chance for the Swiss, who just couldn’t find a way past the human wall Alison. After only 34 minutes, the World Champions left the court with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) win in their bag.
The second match of the pool saw Paolo Nicolai and his partner come up against an Austrian team. The young Italians struggled and suffered a surprising 0-2 (18-21, 17-21) loss.
In an unbelievable fight in Pool B, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers had the better end against Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira. After the Spaniards took the first set, the American champions from Beijing fought back to tie the match. In an intense tiebreak, a highly disputed point was given to Todd and Phil. They took advantage and finally won the match 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 15-13). All the arguing from the Spanish side didn’t help.
Olympic FIVB Hero Reinder Nummerdor and his partner had no problems to win their encounter with a team from Germany in Pool E. The first set especially saw some great play by the Dutch. The final score was 2-0 (21-9, 21-16).
