FIVB Heroes Destinee Hooker and Sheilla Castro to Meet in Olympic Final!

Both teams had to dispatch Asian opponents in the semi-finals. The Americans had a tough time against the fast-rising South Koreans with FIVB Hero Yeon-Koung Kim, the best scorer in the competition so far. But with 24 points from unstoppable FIVB Hero Destinee Hooker, the US team closed the game in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) and booked its place in the final.

After the match, Hooker thanked the audience for the support: “The crowd is very loud and very energetic,” she said. “We hear it more when we walk out on the court at the beginning of the game. During the game it’s like, ‘Look, we’re all here on the court. We need to figure things out and go from there.’”

In the other semi-final, Brazil was up against Japan. A match that proved to be another déjà-vu from four years ago, when the Brazilian girls eliminated the Japanese in the quarter-finals, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18). With 14 points FIVB Hero Saori Kimura became the best scorer of the match, but it wasn’t enough to stop the reigning Olympic champions. FIVB Hero Sheilla Castro scored 13 points for her team and now has her sights firmly set on bringing the gold medal back home again.

Already thinking about the bronze medal match against the Koreans, Kimura analysed the semi-final match: Our service was received very well by Brazil. The variation of the attack wasn’t wrong, but I believe the Japan team made errors and Brazil were good at blocking. We gave points to Brazil by doing that. We won’t get to play in the final but we will still try and get a medal. We can enjoy it and play together.”

It’s the final act of the 2012 Olympic Games, and on Saturday the world will know who claims the volleyball throne. Which FIVB Hero will stand out – Sheilla Castro or Destinee Hooker?
