From 13-19 August, the city hosts the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam. Last year’s champions, Brazilian FIVB Heroes Juliana and Larissa, are back in town in 2012. The Olympic bronze medalists are off to a good start in their return to the World Tour, winning both matches played so far this week in Pool C.
Americans Jen Kessy and April Ross, silver medalists in London, have accomplished the same feat and are leading Pool A. Today they will play their last match in the group stage against FIVB Hero Maria Clara Salgado and hope to stay undefeated in this round. Playing with a new partner in Poland, Maria Clara could not be at the Olympic Games, but received the amazing news of the birth of her sister Carolina’s first son, José, last Sunday.
Three-time Olympic champion Kerri Walsh from the US, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, is playing with a new partner, too. Misty May-Treanor decided to end her career after London, so Kerri came to Stare Jabłonki with Nicole Branagh. Nicole seems to be a great match for Kerri, as the duo have equally won all of their games so far.
About taking part in this Grand Slam, Walsh said: “I love my job and I love winning. Even at the Olympics I was already thinking about coming here. It is my job and I want to win, I’m here to win.”
And there’s more for the fans of our FIVB Heroes, as Italian duo Greta Cicolari/Marta Menegatti and Brazil’s Talita Antunes/Maria Elisa Antonelli are going into battle in Poland as well, hoping to advance in the competition and impress their faithful audience.
