In the first game of the day team Germany walked out on court knowing that should they lose the match they wouldn’t play in quarter-finals. When Serbia led 2-0 it seemed this might be the case. However, Olympic FIVB Hero Georg Grozer had other ideas. With a brilliant individual performance he led his team to a fantastic 3-2 comeback, scoring 39 fantastic points ending the match with a spectacular 18-20 tie-break.
After a disappointing loss to Brazil team Russia needed a confidence boosting result in their next match against Tunisia. But a 3-0 score (25-2, 25-15, 25-23) was flattering, and the win was hard-fought for for Maxim Mikhaylov and his teammates as Noureddine Hefaiedh and Tunisia put up some strong opposition. The Russians will need to continue to improve as the tournament progresses.
Brazil faced defending Olympic champions USA later in the evening in a clash for the lead in Group B. Both teams played outstanding volleyball but Olympic FIVB Hero Clayton Stanley was seemingly unimpressed with his opponents’ block scoring 16 points in attack with 3 aces, and leading his team to a 3-1 victory.
The USA has taken the lead in Group B, but the teams have 2 more games each to try and change the standings. Stay tuned to FIVBheroes.com to follow their Olympic battle!
