Wednesday started positively for Brazilian Olympic FIVB Heroes Larrisa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva, who were first to reach the next phase of the competition, winning over the Czech pair Lenka Hajeckova and Hana Klapalova 2-0 (21-12, 21-18).
The Olympic FIVB Hero from Mauritius, Natacha Rigobert, was out of luck, losing with her teammate Li Yuk Lo 0-2 (11-21, 10-21) to German team Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick. For the team from Mauritius the tournament is over!
In pool B Chinese FIVB Heroines Chen Xue and Xi Zhang put their difficulties at the beginning of the tournament behind them and advanced to the next phase winning 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) over Greek team Maria Tsiartsiani and Vasiliki Arvaniti.
In pool C Australian FIVB Hero Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley said ‘goodbye’ to the tournament losing 1-2 (16-21, 21-18, 11-15) to Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova from Czech Republic.
Meanwhile Olympian champions, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor lost first set, but came back to win 2-1 (17-21, 21-8, 15-10) over Austrian sisters Stefanie and Doris Schwaiger. This means they topped their group and remain unbeaten so far!
Thursday’s matches in Pool D were dominated by another American Olympic FIVB Heroes April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, who won a thrilling last match of the pool round against Spaniards Eliza Baquerizo McMillan and Liliana Fernandez Steiner 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 19-17).
Olympic FIVB Hero Sanne Keizer and teammate Marleen van Iersel also reached the next phase, winning with no difficulties over Argentinean couple Ana Gallay and Maria Virginia Zonta 2-0 (21-12, 21-16).
Pool E was won by Brazilian Olympic FIVB Heroes Maria Antonelli and Talita Rocha, who sealed their lead in the pool with victory over Australians Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-9).
The German FIVB Heroines Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig also advanced, winning 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) against Sophie van Gestel and Madelein Mappelink from Netherlands.
The Italian Olympic FIVB Heroes Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti took firm control of the final pool with a 2-1 (21-12, 23-25, 15-10) win, sending Canadians Annie Martin and Marie-Andree Lessard home.
British Olympic FIVB Hero Zara Dampney and her teammate Shauna Mullin lost against Russian couple Evgeniya Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova 0-2 (23-25, 13-21). For the hosts this is the end of tournament after losing in the Lucky Loosers round 0-2 (15-21, 12-21) against the Schwaiger sisters from Austria.
