It was an extremely exciting day for our star players, playing the final matches of the preliminary round to determine the best four teams of Pool A. The opening match was Australia vs. Poland, in which a victory of Polish team would take them to the top, but the Australians with Olympic FIVB Hero Igor Yudin delivered a high-level performance and earned a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22) victory. With that result, Olympic FIVB Hero Kurek with partner Bartman ended up second in the pool positions.
In the following match the pool leader Bulgaria faced Italy looking to qualify for the quarterfinals as the best of Pool A. Led by an unstoppable FIVB Hero Tsvetan Sokolov, who was the top scorer with 21 points, the Bulgarians beat the Italians in straight sets although the first set was a nail biter ending 32-30! The final result was 32-30, 25-20, 25-19 and Bulgaria not only ended the preliminary round in first place, but with a 4-1 win/loss record.
With first and second places already decided, the final match saw Argentina play Great Britain aiming to qualify as third. A great performance by Olympic FIVB Hero Facundo Conte, the best scorer with 15 points, led the South Americans to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) achieving their objective and giving no chance to the hosts, who ended their Games winless.
Next Wednesday the best eight teams of the tournament will give the fans four volleyball spectacles which promise to be exciting and unforgettable: Argentina vs. Brazil, USA vs. Italy, Poland vs. Russia and Bulgaria vs. Germany.
