Team Serbia needed to win at least one set in a match against Russia to rival Germany for the spot in the quarter finals, but it was not to be: with 18 points scored FIVB Hero Maxim Mikhaylov clinched an easy victory (25-15, 25-20, 25-17), pushing the Serbians down the rankings.
Tunisia was unable to offer much resistance to team USA with the Americans winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19). The captain of the defending Olympic Champions Clayton Stanley was given a rest as his team had already secured their place at the top of Pool B.
The result of the last preliminary match in Pool B couldn’t influence the final standings. Brazil and Germany, both qualified for the next leg of Olympic competition, could relax and play for the fun of it. And that’s precisely what Murilo did, taking the opportunity to sharpen his attacking skills, scoring 5 points and leading his squad to a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-22, 25-19).
In the quarterfinals the USA will meet Italy, Brazil will play Argentina, Russia will have to overcome World League Champions team Poland and Germany will face the leaders of Pool A team Bulgaria.
