Bringing the Dutch team’s campaign to exactly the conclusion its fans were expecting and hoping for in the two-week qualification, Manon can now look forward to attending her seventh European Championship next year in Germany and Switzerland.
Showing no weakness whatsoever at home, the team arrived in Yuzhny full of confidence. The weekend started with a great victory over Denmark 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-17), with our FIVB Hero scoring eight points. But it was on Saturday in the match against the home team that the Oranjes made their qualification a mathematical certainty. A long and fierce battle on the court ended with a five-set victory (20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 15-11) that allowed the Dutch girls to celebrate their spot in the final round of the Europan Championship.
Their last game against Greece proved to be another classy performance for the local fans and yielded a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-16, 25-18). Manon scored 11 points in her best individual performance in the tournament. For more details and statistics, have a look at www.cev.lu.
Manon Flier made her first appearance in the Netherlands’ national team in 2001 and has so far played in six editions of the European Championships. After winning the silver medal in 2009, when she also claimed the Most Valuable Player award, our FIVB Hero is now ready to give her best again and hopes to take home her first gold medal in this competition. Will 13 prove to be a lucky number for Manon and her team?
